The Apennines.
From Gubbio to Nocera Umbra
Gubbio, city of very antique origins, is famous for the
finding of the so called Gubbio Tables, fundamental document
related to the organisation of the city during the Roman
times.
Other memories of its glorious past are the Roman Theatre
dating back to the 1st century and that could host around
6.000 spectators. From the medieval era the most important
remembrance is the Palazzo dei Consoli, imposing building
from the 14th century, which dominates the so magnificent
Piazza Grande,
hanging
over the city, heart of the Feast of the Candles, celebration
that takes place every year on May 15th. The Palazzo is
actually the headquarter of the Civic Museum and of the
Art Gallery. In addition to the Cathedral, dedicated to
the St. Mariano and Giacomo, there are so many other churches,
streets, small squares, pathways that are making of Gubbio
one of the wealthiest and fascinating city of this entire
part of Italy. In the surroundings of the city we find the
church of the Vittorina, that remembers the place where
San Francesco preached to the wolf.
Going towards the south we find Gualdo Tadino dominated
by the Flea Fortress which, with its imposing walls, is
preserving the great Cassero built by the Perugia inhabitants
in 1350.
North of Gualdo, going up the valley we find the most important
centres such as Fossato di Vico, Sigillo and Costacciaro.
Nocera Umbra is located at the centre of a territory made
of woods, mountains and torrents. For this it is already
fascinating and able to maintain untouched the antique traditions
linked to the popular songs and sorties, but it is also
a land where the man, that has been living there from immemorial
time, has known how to build its works, integrating them
in an harmonious way with the landscape. Its historic centre,
not very large, is extremely interesting and is characterised
by the Cathedral and the antique Tower that unfortunately
has reported important damages from the last seismic events.
There you find the country house TORRE
di CORDAGLIE , tower dating from the 13th century with
joint building, located in an ideal position also for walks
or mountain bike excursions. Close to Nocera, in the territory
sprinkled with towers and antique rural properties, to note
the castles of Postignano, Colle and Salmaregia.
