The high valley
of the Tevere River
The high valley of the Tevere river is an area quite homogenous
from an historic and cultural point of view. There are a
lot of small centres rich of history and memories. Among
the most important villages and cities, Montone surely comes
out for its beautiful panoramic location.
The
importance of this characteristic village is linked to the
fact that it has given birth to who is considered the most
important Umbrian condottiere, Braccio Fortebraccio. In
the village we find the church of St. Francesco. There are
also various panoramic points where you can admire the valley
of the Tevere river on one side and the Apennine Mountains
on the other side.
Umbertide, the antique Fratta, with the Rock and the church
of Santa Maria della Reggia, with its octagonal design,
is the first important centre one finds while going up the
valley. In the surroundings, rich of beautiful hills and
torrents, we find a lot of churches and castles, among which
the ones of Civitella Ranieri ,Serra Partucci going towards
Gubbio and Montalto, but also very characteristic landscapes.
A fundamental stop must be made to the Abbey of Montecorona
dating back to the 11th century where there is a beautiful
ciborium of Carolingian era and, going up through the woods,
to the hermitage of the same name, from the 16th century.
Città
di Castello is at the heart of the rich territory, of prime
importance in the history of Umbria. The cathedral, with
its characteristic cylindrical belfry dating back to the
original building founded during the 11th century, the Communal
Palazzo where we can find the influence of Florence and
the imposing Civic Tower dating back to the 14th century
are among the characteristic elements of the urban design.
AGRITURISMO
SANT’ILLUMINATO, 17th century house finely furnished,
located close to the two lakes and immerged in the green
of a hill of latex trees and conifers, will allow you to
join the pleasure of the artistic discovery to the pleasure
of the gastronomic and wine discovery: in fact, here, are
organised wine and oil tasting and the exclusive and emotional
truffle hunting.
Citerna, stick on top of a characteristic hill from which
it dominates the Valtiberina valley, has the important church
of St. Michele Archangel which building was ordered the
Confraternity of the St. Sacrament at the end of the 17th
century. On the parvis we can see an antique Cistern for
the gathering of the rain waters, the most famous of the
so many present on the hill. The village is famous for its
medieval pathways, used during the antiquity for the rounds
of the guards, nowadays used above all for romantic walks.
Monte S. Maria Tiberina, lonely and imposing, dominates
a large landscape. Its profile is an unique element and
it imposes the respect deserved by its history. From the
high Middle Ages it was, with its territory belonging to
the family of the Marquis Bourbon del Monte, one of the
most important feudatory of the oriental Tuscia. The surroundings
of the Mount are beautiful, rich of woods, pathways and
brooks and once in a while you can meet charming villages,
such as Lippiano, famous for its castle, or the ruins, on
the top towards Favalto, Marzana. In San Giustino, last
