The hills of Bettona and Torgiano.
Towards Assisi and the Umbrian valley
Torgiano, famous all over the world for its wine, has always
seen flourishing around the vineyards and the cellars an
intense handicraft activity. On the slopes of the medieval
village of Bettona, you can stop in the country farm house
IL
GIRASOLE, 18th century house, immerged in the vineyards
of Grechetto and Trebbiano. The historic and anthropologic
travel you can make inside the Museum of the Lungarotti
wine is interesting, dedicated to all the works that have
characterised the link between the man and the drink of
the gods; deserving a stay is the country farm house POGGIO
ALLE VIGNE, where you can also taste excellent DOC and
DOCG wines.
Close to the airport of Sant’Egidio you will find
the RIPA
RELAIS COLLE DEL SOLE, which, with its houses nicely
furnished, will give you a warm welcome in Umbria. In Assisi
are famous the linens that were, and are still, worked with
a thorough geometric style creating fantastic motives and
animals. This technique, that has taken the name of ‘Assisi
point’, according to some persons should be coming
from the Middle East and has diffused itself in Europe during
the Middle Ages. If, after you have admired the precious
artistic works of Assisi, you want to delight yourself with
typical regional recipes, you can have a dinner in the country
farm house PRO
VOBIS, where Mrs. Danielle organises for its guests
also interesting embroidery and ceramics.
Montefalco in addition to be a beautiful natural balcony
over the Umbrian Valley and its mounts and land of great
red wines, has also been, historically, city of the antique
linen traditions. The church of San Francesco, transformed
in museum, welcomes precious examples of antique linens,
white linen fabrics and blue cotton thoroughly linked to
the religious traditions and to the popular devotions.
In so many fairs and celebrations, that specially during
the spring and the summer are taking place and are making
your stay in Umbria even more special, in addition to the
offer of delicious dishes coming from the tradition accompanied
by excellent wines, also secular traditions are taken back
to life. Among these are the arts and works, and this is
due to the extraordinary experience lived during the communal
times by the Umbrian villages and to the large number of
corporations that were regulating the everyday life.
In Bevagna, for example, antique village located between
Foligno and Montefalco, in June, during the Market of the
Gaite, are taking place battles of ability between actors
– who often are themselves handicraftsmen or sons
or grandsons of capable weaving workers, decorators, blacksmith,
woodworkers, sculptors – unique experience to live
in an atmosphere full of emotions. If you want to stay in
the surroundings of Montefalco, at the footsteps of the
charming small village of Trevi, the country farm house
NATALINI
is also equipped of a restaurant of typical Umbrian cooking.
