The hills of Bettona and Torgiano
Towards Assisi and the Umbrian valley
Arriving to Torgiano, on the opposite side of the valley
with respect to Perugia, we enters in the place of the same
name: DOC Torgiano. Documents and ruins are testifying of
the antiquity of the presence of the grape in this territory.
In
the Museum of the Wine, strongly desired by the Lungarotti
family, historic producers of wines and responsible of the
great development of the regional vineyards, are preserved
amphora and other objects linked to the cultivation of the
grapes and to the production and preservation of the wine.
If you stop by the country house POGGIO
ALLE VIGNE, still belonging to the Lungarotti family,
you can have a tasting of doc and duct wines.
Beautiful are the hills going down from Brufa towards Miralduolo
and Torgiano where is cultivated, among others, Sangiovese,
Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Montepulciano. Behind Torgiano,
almost protecting it as a sister, Bettona, antique city
dominating the valley of Assisi. All around marvellous woods
of evergreen oaks famous because they are very rich of boletus.
For the lovers of the good table, of the nature and for
the families with children, the Restaurant of the Country
House TORRE
BURCHIO is without any doubt a charming place where
to stop and spend free moments in happy company, with old
and young.
In front of Perugia, in addition to the valley of the Tevere,
we find the large calcareous peak of the Subasio mount,
the mountain of the peace, so loved by St. Francesco. Under
it, elongated on a spur, Assisi.
Between Assisi and Spello we cross an area of extraordinary
landscape beauty and strongly dedicated towards the cultivation
of the olive and of the grape. We are in the DOC Assisi,
area where are produced excellent red wines. The spacious
view on a valley quite large arriving up to Spoleto.
If you like the typical regional recipes, the restaurant
PRO
VOBIS will satisfy your tastes with authentic and tasty
dishes.
The extra virgin olive oil, produced in all this large area,
is considered for its quality, one of the best in the world.
All this thanks to the characteristics of its soils, their
exhibition, the micro climate guaranteeing the right maturation
and the development of the flavour and of the aromas. Comes
out an equilibrated extra virgin olive oil, very fruitful,
remembering the flavour of the fresh olive, excellent to
dress the local dishes and the great vegetables of this
part of Umbria. The cultivation of the slopes with the olives
has left this unique landscape, measured synthesis between
the white calcareous and the silver green of the plants.
If you want to associate the tasting of the excellent extra
virgin olive oil to the visit of an oil press and a charming
landscape with view over Assisi, stop by the MONTAGNOLA
and you will forget the time going through!
On the other part we can see the unique profile of Montefalco,
‘the terrace of Umbria’, in which territory
are growing the grapes of the same name DOCG Montefalco.
The way going through the luminous hills where are cultivated
the precious vineyards giving their name to the wine –
of which up to a few years ago was known only the extraordinary
“passita” version- opens itself on a sweet landscape.
One can feel the presence of the man, its capability to
draw with love and sense of the measure the forms of the
land. The territory includes the beautiful Bevagna and Giano
dell’Umbria up to the DOC area of the Martani hills.
There is a special place where you can taste these Doc wines
and other products of biologic cultivation, at the Restaurant
of the country house LE
DUE TORRI, medieval settlement with an unique fascination
close to the magic village of Spello, where, in addition
to taste a menu of fresh products of the season typically
Umbrian, you can also visit the farm firm and the cattle
of the special “chianina” meat.
Land of predilection, this one too, of the pork, it finds
its peaks of taste in the area of Costano, between Bastia
Umbra and Torgiano, famous for its “porchetta”,
young pork roasted entire and kept by a piece of wood, with
aromas of garlic, wild fennel and other species.
Between Assisi and Bevagna we meet Cannara and the famous
onion celebrated during a fair taking place during the first
half of September. The onions, picked at the end of July,
are crossing each other in beautiful bouquet in order to
be then kept during the autumn and the winter. The culinary
uses are numerous, classical in Umbria, the “schiacciata”,
low “focaccia” cooked in the oven that, in addition
to the onion, often has also the sage or the rosemary.
