From Gubbio to Nocera Umbra
The hermit of Fonte Avellana near Sassoferrato is the main
place of the Apennines mysticism.. In reaching it, passing
through Scheggia and then Isola Fossara, one passes through
the abbey of S. Maria di Sitria, founded by Saint Romualdo
at the beginning of XI century. Fonte Avellana, in a green
narrow peaceful valley between the Catria mountain and the
Corno one, in the diocese of Gubbio but in the area of the
Marches, was made by Saint Pier Damiani the hermit most
renowned of Italy. According to the tradition, just after
1310 here stayed Dante Alighieri, who mentioned the hermit
and its most famous prior in the Paradiso.
Very important, historically talking, was the experience
of the hermit of Serrasanta, above Gualdo Tadino, five hermitical
communities founded in the high medieval epoch in the mountain
area dedicated to Giove, that, after several changes, in
the XV century became a minor friary. Another important
hermitage was born on the top of the Cucco mountain.
