Perugia and its area
Perugia, with its saint Patrons Lorenzo, Ercolano and Costanzo,
is the heart of Umbria and in many places inside its walls,
is deeply stamped the sign of the sacred. Going through
the medieval roads one can meet a lot of traces and references
to a strong religiousness, as several places that characterize
in this sense the town layout. In a few decentralized hill
that overlooks the hills that go down to the Tevere, around
the 1000 arose the Benedictine abbey of S. Pietro, over
a pre-existent church of the VI century having the same
name. Still today, entering the marvellous church or visiting
the adjacent mediaeval gardens, which the University looks
after, one can feel a deep emotion and a sense of time suspension.
On the other side of the town, on another hill with a different
exposure, there is a particular church, that invites to
the deep reflection. This early Christian circular plant
church, dedicated to S. Michele Arcangelo and built in the
period between the V and VII century, is a place full of
suggestions and is the goal of many young people that live
in the nearly university dormitories.
In the present Corso Garibaldi that, over S. Michele Arcangelo,
take to the Franciscan monastery of Monteripido, another
main place of the the Perugia religiousness and characteristic
element of the landscape, is possible to find the monasteries
of several orders and feminine convents. The cathedral dedicated
to Saint Lorenzo is located in the centre of the town and
represents one of the main stops of the Marian devotion,
popular cult often bounded to the daily emergencies, the
maternity fears, the family and marriage state. The ancient
church of Saint Bevignate, near the cemetery, with its grandeur
and essentialness is in one of the other hill offshoots
on which the town extends, this as the others at the bound
between town and country, border full of possibility that
overlooks a sweets olive tree and hill landscape. For having
a meal in an ancient and beautiful manor close to Perugia,
you can have a stop at COVONE
where you will find a warm and friendly welcome. As the
town, also the whole territory is full of chapels, oratories,
churches and cloisters. In order to admire the ancient chapel
of an historic aristocratic house, you can stay at the farmhouse
MONTAGNOLA
located in a panoramic position and surrounded by marvellous
olive groves and green woods. Among the several places to
visit, we absolutely have to mention the impressive abbey
of Santa Maria di Valdiponte in Montelabate between Gubbio
and Perugia, layed on wooden hills rich of rivers, in an
area where were hermits, at the moment is not possible to
visit the abbey, but however it is an essential stop of
a routein the history and the current mysticism of our region.
