Between Foligno and Spoleto
Between Trevi and Spoleto, close to Campello, the Sources
of the Clitunno are celebrating the water, the source liquid
giving life, the hope coming back at each spring. The natural
balconies surrounding this rich valley are on the other
side celebrating the olive and the oil, the gold of the
Umbrian,
their wealth, their liquid treasure.
Towards east, after
the first range of mountains, when the Apennine starts
to make it note, there are two unique places you should
not
miss. The first one is the high plateau of Colfiorito,
elevated plain with incredible colours, pastel picture
with all the
shades, with a protected swamp where has settled down one
of the largest colony in Italy of bitterns, herons of great
dimensions, considered among the most threatened species
in Europe. Land for chickpeas, lentils, haricot beans and
potatoes, poor land that knows how to nourish, surrounded
by sweet and round bas-reliefs that seems to be comforting
udders. The second extraordinary place, towards the inside,
higher, more intimate in its surprising appearance, unpredictable
after the range of mountains surrounding it on each side,
there is the plain of Castelluccio. On it, large flat conch
1.300 metres high, is located the peak of the highest mount
of the Umbria-Marche Apennines, the Vettore, 2.478 metres
high. The blossoming during the late spring of these plains
is one of the most beautiful spectacles that one can meet
in one’s life, the fissures that, as wrinkles, are
ploughing the superficies of the land, going to converge
in a karstic swallow hole, make you think to a primordial
world, to a lively land.
Dozens and dozens of itineraries
of the CAI allows you to cross the Sibylline Mounts – numerous
are the peaks above the two thousands metres – in
long and in large practically all year long. Here, as in
Valnerina,
numerous are the walls adapted for climbing on rocks and
also numerous are the possibilities to practice cross-country
skiing in the splendid plains we have already talked about.
Then, so many are the rivers and torrents where you can
fish.
Lower, the rough and at the same time sweet Valnerina, made of rocks, grasslands,
isolated villages, stories that are getting lost in a mythic past. Towards the
end, little before Terni, the Nera river receives the Velino with an immense
jump forms the famous Marmore waterfalls. Little after, on the road towards Rieti,
is located the charming lake of Piediluco. Then there is Spoleto and all its
territory with Monteluco and its antique woods and the Martani mounts in front
of it, green, enlacing low hills. In the surroundings of Spoleto, inside an antique
rural village, you can find the CASALE
GRANDE, firm with biologic cultivation with rock mill, with a didactic farm
and with a nice trip in horse-drawn coach, new experiences with the nature.
